Mark & Cath Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I have just changed the timing belt on our TDI PD and I have a small problem with it. Before it always rattled at idle and VAG.COM reported the injectors were at 6 BTBC at idle. On checking I found the timing on the cam was way out so I set it all correctly with the tools and rebuilt it. The difference it amazing, it idles quieter, drives smoother the whole lot. But, and here is the but, VAG.COM still reports it as 4 BTDC, it runs great so I am happy but the data is a little concerning, any ideas peeps........ P.S. I have rechecked the timing and it is spot on still. Quote
Richard gal Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 What should it be? ......thinking 4 btdc is fine? Quote
seatkid Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 The ECU adjusts injection timing electronically. Basic cambelt timing is important in that it dictates the range that the ECU can adjust to and the mechanical timing of valve operation which is fixed. Quote
Mark & Cath Posted May 27, 2009 Author Report Posted May 27, 2009 What should it be? ......thinking 4 btdc is fine? According the VAG.COM it should be between 1 BTBC and 2 ATDC at idle. I have checked 2 other TDI's galaxy's and both are 1 degree ATDC at idle. Maybe I should stop worrying about it and enjoy the smooth drive ....... Quote
seatkid Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 The PD injection pressure is driven from the camshaft, so your injectors were probable struggling to do their job properly. You might find that if you disconnect your battery to reset the ECU (check you have the radio code first), the timing may change - its possible the 4deg is as a result of "training". Quote

I will give that a go and report back. Many thanks SeatKid. Quote
srafferty Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 How does one check the timing on VagCom. I'm using version 409. Thanks  Quote
Mark & Cath Posted May 29, 2009 Author Report Posted May 29, 2009 Right then after a weekend and a few hundred miles the timing is now just 2.1 degrees BTDC so it appears it is a learning ECU. Many thanks SeatKid. srafferty. In answer to your question you click "Meas Blocks" on the main screen (it is below "Fault Codes" and I believe it is block 003 but if you scroll through with the down arrow buttons you will soon find it as it is very near the top. Good luck. Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 Hi, I'm glad you got it sorted. Just to put it in perspective, I had a problem on mine where the timing kept going to 25 degrees advanced. Now that was scary. I should think that the odd degree wouldn't have caused too much trouble. the daft thing is that mine sorted iself out eventually, but only after accidentally putting 5 litres of unleaded in by accident. I suppose that made the computer reassess its future. Quote
